Getting to Playa Venao from Panama City

By Gustavo Szuchman, Papaya Holdings · Published · Last updated

Most people drive to Playa Venao. It is about 360 km from Panama City, roughly 5 to 5.5 hours on the Pan-American Highway to Divisa, then south through Chitré, Las Tablas and Pedasí. If you would rather not drive, you can fly to Pedasí (about 30 minutes from Venao) or to Chitré, take a shared or private shuttle, or ride the bus via Las Tablas. Playa Raya is a further five minutes or so south-west along the coast road.

By car: Panama City to Playa Venao

The drive is simple and paved the whole way.

  1. Leave Panama City heading west over the Panama Canal. The Centenario Bridge is open in both directions all day. The Bridge of the Americas runs lane reversals at rush hour.
  2. Follow the Pan-American Highway (Interamericana) west to Divisa, about 3 hours out of the city.
  3. At Divisa, turn south onto the Azuero road (Avenida Belisario Porras) towards Chitré.
  4. Continue through Chitré and Las Tablas to Pedasí.
  5. From Pedasí, take the coast road south-west to Playa Venao, about 30 minutes.

Allow 5 to 5.5 hours without long stops. Most people stop once in Penonomé, Aguadulce or Chitré. A few practical points:

  • Use Waze. It is the navigation app most used in Panama, and it shows traffic and police checkpoints.
  • Watch the speed limits. They change often between 40 and 100 km/h, especially on the Divisa–Pedasí stretch, and there are speed traps.
  • Carry your driver's licence and passport. A foreign licence is valid for driving in Panama for a limited period after you arrive (three months, according to local guides). Check your own case.
  • Avoid driving the Azuero roads at night if you can. They are narrow in places, with cattle, cyclists and few lights.
  • Fill up in Las Tablas or Pedasí. There are few fuel stations after Pedasí.

Coming straight from Tocumen International Airport

Tocumen (PTY) is on the east side of Panama City, so the drive adds about 20 km and some city traffic. Expect roughly 380 km and 5.5 to 6 hours. You have three choices:

  • Rent a car at Tocumen and drive the route above. If you land in the afternoon, stay the night in the city or on the way rather than finish the drive in the dark.
  • Book a private transfer. A driver meets you at arrivals and takes you to your door in Venao.
  • Take a shared shuttle. Some operators collect passengers at Tocumen. Check the departure times against your landing time.

By air: Pedasí and Chitré

Domestic flights leave from Marcos A. Gelabert airport (PAC) at Albrook in Panama City, not from Tocumen. If you are connecting from an international flight, allow time for the 30–45 minute taxi across the city.

Pedasí (PDM, Capitán Justiniano Montenegro). Pedasí's airstrip is about 2 km north of the town, and from there it is roughly 30 minutes by road to Playa Venao. The runway is short (about 1,000 m), so only small planes use it. In October 2026, Flytrip was advertising scheduled flights to Pedasí on several days a week (not Saturdays). Air Panama no longer flies this route. Charter flights are also available. Schedules on this route change often, so confirm directly with the airline before you plan around it.

Chitré (CTD, Alonso Valderrama). Air Panama flies Albrook–Chitré several times a week. The flight takes about 30 minutes, and fares have been seen from around $45 one way. Chitré is about 1.5 to 2 hours by road from Playa Venao, so you will need a rental car or a driver. Chitré is also the region's main town for the hospital, banks and larger shops.

Small planes have tight baggage limits. Surfboards and extra bags may cost more or have to wait for a later flight.

By bus

The bus is cheap but takes most of a day.

  1. Panama City (Albrook terminal) → Las Tablas. Buses run regularly through the day. The trip takes about 4 to 5 hours and costs around $10.
  2. Las Tablas → Pedasí. A local bus of about 30–45 minutes. These run only in daylight, with nothing after about 6 p.m. Some services continue to Playa Venao, usually once a day in the early afternoon.
  3. Pedasí → Playa Venao. There are only a couple of local buses a day, so most people take a taxi ($25–40).

Bus times are not well published online. Ask at the Albrook terminal or call your accommodation before you go.

Getting to Playa Raya from Playa Venao

Playa Raya is the next beach along the coast, south-west of Playa Venao.

  • From Venao: continue west on the coast road (towards Cañas and Tonosí) for about 5 minutes, then take the turn-off down to the beach.
  • From Pedasí airstrip: about 25–30 minutes.
  • From Panama City: the same route as Venao, plus 5 minutes. Allow about 5 hours or a little more.

Playa Raya has no hotels, restaurants or shops. Stay in Venao and drive over. If you are coming to see land, contact us first and we will meet you there and walk the lots with you. Prices and availability are on our Playa Raya real estate page.

Which option suits you?

  • First visit, coming to look at property: fly into Tocumen, stay one night in Panama City, then drive or take a private transfer in the morning. You will arrive in daylight with a car for viewings.
  • Short trip with little time: fly Albrook–Pedasí and get a taxi to Venao.
  • Owners going back and forth: most drive, because a car is useful for everything in Venao.
  • Budget travellers and surfers: bus to Las Tablas, then a local bus or taxi.

If you are planning a viewing trip, our Playa Venao real estate page and buyer's guide will help you get the most from the visit.
